John Pringle `Bells' MacDonald, 78, of Lorne Street, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Tuesday, April 13, 2004.

Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Neil and Margaret (MacQueen) MacDonald.

John was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Cape Breton Highlanders; and was employed with the bar mill of Sydney Steel, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of St. Andrews United Church, Sydney, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12.

Surviving is his wife, Vivian (Serrick); daughters, Diane (Bruce) Clarke, Cox-heath, and Norma (Robert) MacVay, Sydney; sons; Gary (Isabel), Glace Bay, and Michael (Natasha), Halifax; sister, Norma Latour, Ottawa; brother, Hughie (Ann), Sydney; and grandchildren, Lind-say and Scott Clarke, Ross and Neal MacDonald, Chris Boutilier, Heather and Kerry Jean MacVay, and Kate and John Ivan MacDonald.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Ann and sister, Sadie Ivey
