Alexander (Sandy) Sutherland - 87, Florence

We regret to announce the passing of Sandy Sutherland, 87, Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital.

Born in Dalkeith, Scotland, he was the son of the late John and Annie (Daley) Sutherland.

He was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence.

Sandy was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the Cape Breton Highlanders from 1940-1945.

After he returned home from overseas, he worked as a coal miner for many years.

He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 83 in Florence. He was also an honorary member of the Florence Volunteer Fire Department. Sandy delivered meals on wheels with the Golden K Club for many years. He was a member of the Orange Lodge in North Sydney, and was an avid dart player. He enjoyed many summers at his cottage in Middle River.

He is survived by a brother, William (Lorette), St. Catharines; and a sister, Jean, Welland, Ont. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Sandy was predeceased by his loving wife, Philomena in 1987, and his sister, Annie.
